Rockies can’t overcome big deficit

Just like the game on Friday, the Rockies saw themselves down by a big amount early and they were fighting an uphill battle. Tyler Chatwood was not sharp on Saturday in his first game back off of the DL. Chatwood allowed six runs (five earned) in five innings pitched. He gave up seven hits and allowed a home run in the third for the final two runs off of him.

The Rockies offense could not dig themselves out and the game got out of hand quickly. Christian Bergman came on after Chatwood and allowed three more runs. The Diamondbacks would not need anything more after that as their bullpen did a good job of keeping the Rockies offense at bat.

Colorado had ten hits in the game, but eight of them came off of the starter Braden Shipley and they didn’t score a run after the sixth inning. This is a game that has to be placed on the rotation and not on the offense. Giving up seven runs and nine runs is never a good formula for winning games and the offense can simply not sustain the kind of production needed to win.

The Rockies bullpen is easily their biggest concern going into the offseason and if they are to compete next year they need to solidify it. The rotation definitely has the talent to set up the back end of the bullpen, but outside of Adam Ottavino, the Rockies will have a lot of question marks. Boone Logan is on the last year of his contract and Carlos Estevez has been inconsistent. Estevez is a rookie and that could mean he will get things figured out in the coming year, but there will still be holes. Jake McGee has been unreliable and although he has done better recently, he is still not someone you would want in high leverage situations.

This Rockies team is loaded with young talent in their lineup and rotation. This team will have some really great games where they seem like a team that could win the division, but with that excitement there will be disappointment. A young team is bound to run into cold streaks while they figure out the kind of players they are. You can only hope that they run into those troubles early in the year and that the veterans on this team can help right the ship before they fall too far out of the playoff race. That will be the goal for next year, winning the division with some a high potentiality for winning the wild card.
