There’s no way around it, the bullpen has lost too many games for the Rockies and is the reason they won’t make the playoffs. Wednesday night saw the bullpen blow another lead, the fourth in six games, and the Rockies wasted a comeback of their own when Adam Ottavino couldn’t convert a four out save.
In three games against the Rangers, the Rockies have blown an eighth inning or later lead. On Wednesday, the Rockies were down by two runs in the eighth and came back on a two run triple by David Dahl. Dahl then scored on a sac fly by Ryan Raburn to give the Rockies a one run lead.
The lead was very short lived however as the bullpen could not hold it. In the bottom half of the inning Boone Logan came on to see what he could do. He got Elvis Andrus to strike out, but then Mitch Moreland reached on an error by Mark Reynolds. Shin-Soo Choo was hit by a pitch to put two on. Walt Weiss then elected to bring in Jordan Lyles. Lyles got Ian Desmond to ground out, but it did allow the runners to advance to second and third. Then Carlos Beltran was intentionally walked and Adam Ottavino came out for the four out save.
That move is what lost the game for the Rockies and while hindsight is always 20/20, Weiss should have had either Ottavino or Lyles face Beltran. Adrian Beltre has been on a hot streak and simply strives for the big hit. The move did eventually hurt the Rockies as Beltre hit a two run single up the middle to give the Rangers the 5-4 lead. That is how the game would end as the Rockies could not do anything in the ninth.
In the end, both the offense and bullpen could’ve done better. The Rockies tallied only six hits on the night with three coming from Charlie Blackmon. The key hit was David Dahl extending his hit streak to a franchise record tying 16 games. But outside of his hit, the Rockies did not do much on offense and with how the bullpen has been going, they need all the lead they can get.
Thursday will cap the series against the Rangers as the Rockies will try to salvage a win. They have obviously not had great luck against the Rangers and to win a game, they will almost certainly need a lot of offense or a lot of scoreless innings from Chad Bettis.
