Tuesday, May 17th 6:15pm: Chad Bettis (3-2 4.56 ERA) vs. Jaime Garcia (3-2 2.58 ERA)
Contrary to most Rockies pitchers, Bettis has actually pitched better at home, despite having a lower road batting average (.256 vs. .276). This will be a good game for Bettis to go against a good team with a pretty fierce lineup. The Rockies have a career .282 average against Garcia in 71 at bats. Garcia has pitched well this year, but the Rockies will have a good chance to ruin his good start. They are carrying momentum into this series winning the previous four games and will try and keep that rolling. This is a big series for the Rockies to keep pace with the Dodgers and Giants.
Wednesday, May 18th 6:15pm: Chris Rusin (1-1 4.85 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (3-3 6.80 ERA)
Wainwright has been pretty bad this year. He has given up at least three runs in each of his 8 starts and has only reached the seventh inning once. In his limited history against Rockies batters he has had success, but that is the Wainwright of the past and the Rockies can certainly cause some damage to him. They will likely need to as well with Rusin on the mound. Chris has good starts and he has bad starts, but until he shows some consistency he will only be as valuable as a number five starter or long relief guy. He doesn’t have a place in this rotation in the future so any quality starts they get out of him are more than the Rockies can ask for.
Thursday, May 19th 5:15pm: Jon Gray (1-1 4.71 ERA) vs. Michael Wacha (2-4 3.23 ERA)
Michael Wacha has handled the Rockies in years past, as the Cardinals as a team have, but he will be going against the Rockies hottest starting pitcher. Jon Gray earned his first win last week and he is now coming off of three very good starts. Gray is finally looking like the pitcher the Rockies expected when they took him with the number one draft pick and this game could very well end up a 1-0 or 2-1 win for either team. Whichever team scores four runs will win this game. If the Rockies can win two of three in this series it will be great, especially considering they take the Pirates off after this series, but I also expect the Rockies can sweep this series riding the good pitching performances they have been getting.
