DJ Augustin and the Nuggets beat the Charlotte Hornets 101-93 on Saturday night. From the start of the night, the Nuggets came out and fought hard to control the game. The Hornets led only once during the game and it was off their first shot, a three-pointer that put them ahead 3-2 and from there on out the Nuggets took over.
7 players scored in double figures for the Nuggets with DJ Augustin leading the pack against his former team. Augustin scored 24 coming off the bench going 8-11 shooting. He also knocked down three three-pointers. For Augustin, this game was huge and showed he has potential to be with this team in the future. 28-year old Augustin could find himself as a future leader of this team. This bodes well for rookie Emmanuel Mudiay as a good leader at point guard will help Mudi to develop his game and allow the Nuggets to take more chances with Mudiay knowing they have a good backup just in case.
Rookie Nikola Jokic also had a good game, earning himself a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Starters Gary Harris and Darrell Arthur, who was playing for an injured Kenneth Faried, scored 13 apiece. This game was not as strong from the starters as the Nuggets may have liked, but they did play well and the Nuggets bench played strong enough to secure the victory.
Overall, it was a well played game for the Nuggets and the team effort was there that led them to the victory. They out rebounded the Hornets 51 to 38 and despite shooting 14 less three-pointers than Charlotte, they made the same amount.
For the Hornets, this was a costly loss. They were tied with the Heat for the fourth best record in the Eastern conference, but after a big Heat win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, they dropped down two places, now behind the Heat and the Boston Celtics.
The Nuggets have a tough game coming up on Monday as they face Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Nuggets will hope to ride some of this momentum to a win, but it will not be an easy game.
